Enjoy free and/or paid events, go rock pool hopping (read our blog on Kiama & Gerringong rock pools), eat your way around Kiama town (read our blog on Kiama’s best eats) and base yourself in a great centrally located hotel (learn more about Nova Kiama and its rooms).
So here we go, below you will find our top picks for not to be missed events and things to do around the NSW South Coast in January. We have listed our picks in order of date so you can easily add them to your calendar.
The Huskisson “Husky” Carnival runs annually from 26th December until the end of January. So why not spend the first day of the year riding ‘The Hurricane’, ‘Sizzler’ and the ‘Dodgem Cars’?! There are also a few rides available especially for the little ones, so the whole family is guaranteed to have a great time! You pay a flat fee for four hours (the park is open from 18:00 – 22:00) which means unlimited rides for everyone! Planning multiple visits? Buy a season-pass and save. Get your tickets here.
Gerringong Men’s Shed Annual Duck Derby
The Gerringong Men’s Shed* will be holding its annual Duck Derby on the 3rd of January 2020 at the footbridge adjacent to the Crooked River, Gerroa. Expect lots of players and spectators cheering on their adopted rubber ducks ($5 per duck). The prize for the winning duck will be presented on the day. There will be a BBQ sausage sizzle and soft drinks available making it a perfect family day out.
All money raised will help the Gerringong Men’s Shed fund improvements to provide a place for men’s mental health and wellbeing in the local community.
*Gerringong Men’s Shed is a place of encouragement for all to take an interest in their own health and well-being. They encourage a friendly and pressure free environment. You can just go there and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all you’re looking for.
Dreams – Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks Tribute Show
“These guys were seriously good. The electric atmosphere was evenly matched by the musicians’ playing prowess and the singers’ vocals. As a tribute band, this group is in a league of their own.” A quote by author Sharon Halliday which makes attending the Dreams – Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks Tribute Show sound like a very good idea!
Re-live the 70’s and 80’s vibes with one of our favourite legendary bands ‘Fleetwood Mac’ at the Shoalhaven Bowling Club.

Illawarra Folk Festival
The Illawarra Folk Festival was first held at Jamberoo almost 35 years ago and is now one of the biggest festivals in Australia. The festival – run entirely by volunteers – features 150 acts over 4 days. On top of music and performances, you can also enjoy folk school, workshops, spoken word events, craft stalls and tasty international cuisine.
The festival is set in the northern Illawarra escarpment at Bulli. The event is known and loved for the diversity of music performances and the intimate yet vibrant community atmosphere.
One of our absolute favourite Kiama events is back in town! The Kiama Show is the longest running community event in the area, and this year we welcome the 172nd edition!
The Kiama Show is a true family event. Expect traditional agricultural events including cattle and horse riding displays. The kids will love whip cracking performances, the pet show, street theatre, the farmyard nursery and the carnival rides. There will be lots of food options available so bring your appetite! The show ends on Saturday night with an unforgettable fireworks display.
The show is held at the Kiama Showground in Bong Bong Street, alongside Surf Beach. Kiama Showground is a short walking distance from Nova Kiama, so why not make a weekend of it and book one of our Nova Kiama family rooms?
